Art by Carly Dodd @tarkari.art
Hello everyone,
I’m going to post twice this week. If you think that 2 newsletters a week is too much or not enough, let me know. I don’t want to spam people, but I’m also enjoying putting these together.
So!
In lieu of the #BlackLivesMatter protests in the US, and the reflection on Australia’s appalling track record with Aboriginal deaths in custody and higher incarceration rates, there has been an outpouring of shareable infographics bringing attention to How To Protest, How To Be An Ally, How To Be Anti-Racist, fundraisers and charities, as well as black-owned businesses. Because the political storm is much more pronounced in the States at the moment, it has been harder to find a comprehensive list of ways to help Indigenous causes at home. I also find it’s quite clumsy to send people to links in your ‘bio’ on Instagram, and Twitter is so fleeting that links fly by, lost in the split second attention span of users. So, I’ve put together a list of links to fundraisers, charities and businesses here so that you can have it bookmarked to come back to when you have the time.
Fundraisers:
Justice for Tanya Day — Petition to Abolish the Offence of Public Drunkenness
Organisations:
NASCA — National Aboriginal Sporting Change Academy
ANTaR — Australians for Native Title and Reconciliation
Business Directory:
Supply Nation — support Indigenous businesses
People:
Subscribe to Amy McQuire’s substack
Follow @IndigenousX on Social Media
Some articles:
The Guardian’s Deaths in Custody Database Infographic
How To Show Real Solidarity After Invasion Day
If you know of any other helpful resources, let me know and I’ll include them in Friday’s newsletter.
Thanks again for reading!
I leave you with a discussion between two of my favourite queens, Bob the Drag Queen and Peppermint, on why you should say Black Lives Matter. It’s an approachable yet in depth chat, check it out:
